Every Bird Has a Story:

This is a favorite bird. I don’t usually pick favorites, but this is one of a very elite group. In 2014 I solo paddled and birded the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Think Appalachian Trail for Paddlers, but with less support and infrastructre There are no groups gathering at huts and outfitters. It’s hard. There are miles and miles of upstream work. There are huge lakes (Lake Champlain) to cross. It’s grueling. It’s lonely. It’s just damned hard.

At the toughest times. When I was the most lonely...or exhausted…or depressed, there were the White Throated Sparrows. In the north country they are everywhere. their song is so sweet and calming. Every single time I heard one, it brought me peace. It may seem like such a small thing. It was, but it made all the difference.
